Externally driven change is all around us and these changes undoubtedly impact the engineering community.  While the technical knowledge, skills and abilities that historically have been the tenets of the engineering profession are still very important, they are just not sufficient any more.  Engineering problems today often involve significant social complexity, as well as significant technical complexity.  As the interactions between society and engineering become more complex, engineers need to have a clear understanding of the ways their profession is connected to the larger, contemporary society.

In addition to a host of sophisticated technical skills, tomorrow’s engineers must also have the skills needed to appreciate, comprehend, communicate, relate, lead, inspire and ultimately to build ownership in a solution between competing interests of diverse stakeholders.

The 2007 Infrastructure System Conference (ISC), Engineering in an Increasingly Complex World: What does the Future Hold?, will consist of a plenary session and technical breakout workshops on:

  • construction;
  • civil engineering & transportation;
  • geotechnical engineering;
  • materials engineering;
  • mechanical engineering;
  • electrical engineering
  • dam safety;
  • structural engineering; and
  • hydrology, hydraulics and coastal engineering.

Additional workshops on R&D, security engineering, standards and criteria, specifications, cost engineering, engineering software systems, Surveying/Mapping, GIS, CAD/BIM, and other inter-disciplinary topics will also be offered, along with individual Community of Practice (CoP) meetings.

This conference will also present USACE’s "12 Actions for Change," which are a set of actions that USACE will focus on to transform its priorities, processes and planning.  The "12 Actions for Change" fall within three overarching themes:

  • Effectively implement a comprehensive systems approach
  • Effective and transparent communication
  • Reliable public service professionalism

This conference provides an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and to share technical knowledge within the engineering and construction community.
