Building National Technical Competency
Welcome to the official site for the 2009 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Infrastructure Systems Conference, co-sponsored by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). This biennial Conference will be held July 20-24, 2009 at the Cleveland Convention Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The ISC provides an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and share technical knowledge within the A/E/C community.
The theme of the 2009 Infrastructure Systems Conference (ISC) is "Building National Technical Competency." The ability to design and manage the production of technical engineering designs and engineering services, and to manage the production of small and large scale construction in a professional, timely and cost-effective manner is the essence of this competency. The 2009 ISC is one of many activities that continue the USACE tradition as a learning organization to ensure that the Corps is prepared to meet the current and future engineering and construction needs of the nation.
The 2009 ISC will consist of a plenary session and technical breakout sessions, all which offer Professional Development Hours (PDHs). The breakout sessions will cover many disciplines which include, but are not limited to:
- Hydrology Hydraulics & Coastal (HH&C)
- Environmental & Ecosystem Restoration;
- Coastal;
- Water Management Operations;
- Hydraulic Studies;
- Geotechnical & Materials Engineering;
- Civil Engineering & Transportation;
- Structural Engineering;
- Dam & Levee Safety;
- Construction & A/E Management;
- Electrical & Mechanical Engineering;
- Infrastructure Protection, Security & Resilience;
- BIM and CAD;
- Geospatial;
- Survey and Mapping;
- Interdisciplinary;
- Sustainable Design;

- Best Practices for Technical Competency & Efficiency
This conference will also address USACE's "Actions for Change," a set of actions USACE will focus on to transform its priorities, processes and planning. The "Actions for Change" fall within four overarching themes:
- Comprehensive Systems Approach
- Risk Informed Decision Making
- Communication of Risk to the Public
- Professional and Technical Expertise
